A blocked line and a broken line look the same from inside the house on day one. What separates them is whether clearing it holds. These are the signs the pipe has failed rather than clogged.

We run a camera inspection down the line before quoting anything, so you find out which of the two you have before you pay for either. If it only needs clearing we will tell you that and clear it as a sewer and drain cleaning job instead, which costs a fraction of a repair.

Two things are worth ruling out first. On a property with a septic tank or cesspool, a whole-house backup can mean the tank is full rather than the line is broken, and pumping the tank is the first thing to check. And if sewage is already coming up through the lowest fixtures, treat it as an emergency and call before anything else — we answer 24/7 across Oʻahu.

People describe this job in several ways, and most of them mean the same thing. A sewer replacement or sewer line replacement is a new pipe laid on the run between the building and the street main, or between the building and a septic tank or cesspool. A sewer line repair fixes one section of that run — a cracked joint, a root intrusion, a single crushed length — and leaves the rest in place. Trenchless sewer repair and no-dig pipe repair are two names for the same approach: lining the existing pipe from an access point instead of opening a trench along its whole length.

Which of those you need comes off the camera footage, not the driveway. The inspection shows where the pipe is damaged, how badly, and whether it still holds enough of its shape to be lined; that settles repair against replacement and trenchless against open-cut, and it is why we will not name a method over the phone.

Sewer maintenance is the other side of this: a sound line that is grease-coated or scaled wants hydro jetting to take the pipe back to its own wall, not a repair, and we will tell you which side of that line your pipe is on.

Trenchless means repairing the piping along its existing path instead of digging it out. On Oʻahu that matters more than most places: driveways, mature landscaping and tight lot lines make open-cut expensive well beyond the pipework itself.

It is not always the answer, and we would rather say so before you are committed than after the machine is on site.

Either way we handle the permit side and the reinstatement. Full replacement is the honest answer sometimes, and when it is we say so.

Roots are the most common reason a lateral on this island fails before its time. A sewer line carries warm water and nutrients, and any gap lets a little of both into the soil around it. Old clay and cast-iron laterals have a joint every few feet, and that is where the roots go in: hair-fine at first, then thick enough to catch paper and hold it. Banyan, monkeypod and mango will find a lateral from well across the yard, and a hedge planted over the run will find it faster.

Hydro jetting versus cutting. A mechanical cutter on a cable shaves the roots back to the pipe wall and gets the line flowing. It leaves the stubs, it leaves whatever grease and scale the roots were holding, and it does nothing to the joint they came through, so the same blockage is back in a season or two. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to clear the roots and the buildup with them, which takes the pipe back to its own wall and gives the camera a clean look at the entry point. Both are sewer and drain cleaning jobs, and neither is a repair. On an old lateral with one root intrusion, jetting on a schedule is a fair way to live with it. When the same spot blocks every few months, the joint needs sealing.

Trenchless lining is what stops them coming back. If the camera shows a pipe that still holds its shape, a liner cured inside the existing lateral seals every joint along the run, and the roots have nowhere left to enter. That is the trenchless repair described above, and root intrusion is the case it was made for. Where the roots have already crushed or displaced the pipe, that section is dug out and replaced, and the rest can still be lined. We camera the line first, so you know which of the three you are paying for before anyone is on site.
